Deep diving...
The deepest no-limit freedive by a male is 214 m (702 ft 1.18 in), by HERBERT NITSCH (Austria) in Spetses, Greece, on 14 June 2007. Note that the dive is accomplished without the use of breathing equipment - the diver simply keeping his mouth closed having taken a gulp of atmospheric air prior to submersion.
Widely considered to be the most dangerous form of freediving, no-limits practitioners can descend and ascend using the method of their choosing. Many divers use a bar or sled fixed to a line to take them down, while returning with the aid of gas balloons.
The perils: At 214 m, the body & head of a free-diver is under 21x normal atmospheric pressure - the lungs are compressed, if possible, to 1/21 of their volume at sea level; their hearts are beating 4 times a minute; their abdominal organs are compressed into their thoracic cavities; blood begins to excessively collect in the thorax; there is the high risk of heart attack, stroke and loss of consciousness; ocular and ear problems are critical.... the list goes on!
